Hoods do all of the work of a hat and scarf with fewer drafts and less fuss. They are very warm and protective, and grew from a very practical garment into a fashionable staple over the centuries. This is a fairly exact reproduction of an 11th century garment found in Norway. While on the later side, the Skjoldehamn ensemble is a popular reference for Viking history enthusiasts. Newer discussion leans towards the person who wore this being Sami, a neighbor to the culture we call Vikings, but the grave contained multicultural artifacts and very little identifying evidence was left, so very little is known for sure about the wearer.

Made to the original size, the hood is quite small. The neck opening is about 22" around. Most adults would be unable to wear it. It is made from 100% wool, and includes all the hand finishing and decorative stitches that make the original so distinctive. Every messy stitch and odd construction choice mirrors those in the original as much as possible, without sacrificing durability. The mysterious ties have been left out for now, mostly because they did not seem to get much use in the original.  The literature on this find is in Norwegian and much of it is no longer available, so some interpretation is necessary, and not everyone agrees on some of the fine details of how the original was made. Thread tensioning and decorative intent are some of the most common subjects of debate. If you are wanting a display piece or have a small head that needs insulating, you can tout this near exact reproduction for all of your 11th century outerwear needs.
