Hoods were a well-loved practical and fashionable staple throughout the medieval period. By the end of the 12th century, they were developing a noticeable tail at the crown of the head, and by the beginning of the 14th, the iconic tail known as a liripipe was a staple. While somewhat practical, the length of your liripipe was an opportunity to show off your wealth, as fabric was very expensive. It was sometimes used to tie the hood in place in foul weather, or out of your peripheral. Workmen are often using the liripipe in creative ways in paintings and illuminations from the time. Sometimes they were rolled up around the face opening and put atop the head that way, with the skirt and pipe draping down. This eventually became its own hat, called a chaperon.

This hood has an army green, 100% wool shell and a sea foam green, 100% cotton lining. The neck is approximately 26" around, which can be comfortably pulled over most people's heads and hair. The liripipe is over 3' long, giving plenty of length for your practical and fashionable needs. The medium weight, dense, wool is a great insulator and breathable. Most dirt can be brushed off the wool with ease between washings, and the cotton lining will hold up to scrubbing, for tough stains. It may be washed in water, but cold is recommended, as wool is prone to warping. and shrinking.
